Breastfeeding and Midwives

Case Study Scenario

Introduction

This assignment aims to examine and evaluate the research and, evidence and policies which underpin the midwife role in providing antenatal breastfeeding information to women and their families. A complex biological fluid makes human milk that change over time and growth. The dietetic and anti-infective essentials are necessity for progress, development and growth of mothers and infants. Benefits of breastfeeding include reductions of childhood infections, ear infections, childhood leukemia, allergies and sudden infant death syndrome (Hoddinott et al., 2008). Teenagers like Emily are a third less likely to breastfeed than older women (Department for Children, Schools and Families 2008). This results in a high risk of avoidable health conditions in vulnerable groups, leading to widening health inequalities and reduced life chances (WHO, 2003). A care plan for Emily is developed for practical implication.

LO1: FACTORS THAT DRIVE CONTEMPORARY MIDWIFERY CARE

This section highlights national and local governmental policies to facilitate best practices for contemporary midwifery care. These policies will considerate midwives; mothers and infants for good anternal care and promote sound knowledge for its importance.

Midwifery 2020 identifies the public responsibility of midwives for the enhancement of health and social well being.

It also contributes in reducing inequalities with provision of a high-quality antenatal care (Sullivan et al., 2011).

The government policies of Twenty-first century are relocating and shifting focus to community based services of maternity care (Sandall et.al., 2007, pp. 255).

Government and national policies should address critical analysis to undertake an impact of growing trend for part-time working among midwives.

The Government policies of UK have promoted the midwife as first point of contact for accessing maternity services and provisions.

They will be possible first point of contact for professional and timely diagnosis. Early risk assessment and booking with maternity services before gestation will be the prime objective.

Organizational structures are not supporting in these areas. In many domains, there is no point of system to enable and empower women to access midwife without consulting General Physician (GP).

Nationally in the UK, the Department of Health (DOH) create a breastfeeding policy that enable to promote breastfeeding with creating accessible settings, information in relation with breastfeeding. Emily can be facilitated with two birthing rooms (with pools), seven postnatal beds, and support staff with breastfeeding and parenting skills (Choices, 2011, pp. 39).

LO 2: ENSURING EVIDENCE BASED PRACTISE

The chose if breastfeeding before or during pregnancy is based on women that is suggested by research studies (Baildam, 2000, pp. 199-215). The need of comprehensive education and reflection of core content is necessary for the employment of midwives. This is the core content for the WHO/UNICEF course content of 20 hours. Front line management and staff should participate to structure a plausible ...
