Brain Tumor

Introduction

The human brain is considered to be a single organ that performs the overall manipulation like a computer, receives information from the senses and sends the signals or responses to all internal muscles and organs. In reality, brain is just one part of Central Nervous System (CNS) that further includes the spinal cord and the meninges. This CNS consists of countless individual cells which are controlled by DNA (Schiffer, 2006). Sometimes the genetic material builds up an error or alteration that stops the functioning of the cell. The expansion of this error turns out to be visible tumor called the brain tumor.

This tumor may force a closer section of the brain pushing it against the skull. The tumor can also block the flowing of the blood or other fluids such as; the spinal fluid that are circulating the brain. Moreover, this tumor has the ability to spread in other parts of the brain and the spinal cord by spreading into the spinal fluid (Bodey et al. 2004). Brain tumor can also be developed by a cancer or tumor in other organs of the body. The level of threat or danger of a tumor can be measured by its location, size or type of development.

Classification

Several factors involve in categorizing the tumors of the brain which include their location, involvement of types of cells and there speed of growing (Shannon, 2010). The classifications of tumor terms that are usually used by doctors include;

Low-grade Tumor

High-grade Tumor

Localized Tumor

Invasive Tumor

Primary Tumor

Secondary Tumor

Low-grade Tumor

The tumor which grows slowly is called low grade tumor. This is considered less threatening and is easily curable.

High-grade Tumor

The tumor which grows rapidly and aggressively is called high grade tumor. This type of tumor has the ability to enter forcefully in the nearby tissue or spread in another part of the body. This tumor usually presents a worse outlook and is subject to recurring after treatment.

Localized Tumor

The tumor which is confined in one part of the brain only is called a Localized Tumor. It is relatively easier to remove as long as it is located in a reachable part of the brain.

Invasive Tumor

The tumor which spreads in the neighboring areas is called an Invasive Tumor. It is very difficult or may be considered impossible to remove this type of tumor.

Primary Tumor

The tumor which originally generates in the brain tissue is called a Primary Tumor.

Secondary Tumor

The tumor that is made up of cells which initially originates somewhere else in the body and then moves to some part of the brain is called a secondary tumor. This tumor is also called the Metastatic tumor. This is the more common type of tumor.

Causes

The primary cause of brain tumor is the abnormality in the growth of a cell or certain cells which are subject to multiplication too quickly.
