Introduction:

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is a semi-voluntary organization of USA; this association has the responsibility of arranging the athletic programs in the USA and Canada. The headquarters of NCAA is in Indiana.

In August 1973, NCAA changed its setup and created three divisions to look after the different needs of the association. The three divisions were Division I, Division II, and Division III. According to the rules, the schools lying under the Division I and Division II can present scholarships to the sportsperson for a particular sport, and the schools lying under the Division III could not offer scholarship to their students. The Division I was broken into Division I-A and Division I-AA in 1978 and in 2006, these divisions were renamed as Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) respectively. The Football Bowl Subdivision does not utilize a challenge system to make out a champion; instead, it uses a series of bowl games to determine a champion. The sports writers and non-players select the champion team through voting. A bowl game is played usually after the seasonal football games. At the FBS level, a team who wins at least six games during the whole championship is eligible to be “bowl.” These teams are then invited to play bowl games based on their rankings.

Discussion:

The NCAA should eliminate the bowl football for a number of reasons. The bowl system does not allow many teams to come forward and make their place in the final league. The bowl system does not to determine the absolutely best team over the period, due to a very simple and obvious reason i.e. at the end only two of the teams can qualify for the FBS final championship. The history of the FBS tells us that it is very difficult to determine the two teams that undoubtedly the best among all, because each team has its good day and bad day, you must every team a chance. The LSU tigers were the champions of the 2007 FBS championship, and they were the only team over the history of FBS championship who had won the championship twice. This shows the drawback in the system of FBS championship, the best teams do not have proper chance to play and show their talent.

Many teams can say that they should have been given a chance to have a go at the National Championship at the college football level, but they could not get a chance due to the bowl system. Especially, teams like Georgia and USC can make this claim based on their performance throughout the year 2007. The LSU are the champions and they thoroughly deserve it but due to the bowl system, many teams can make this claim that they ...
