Working With Service Users With Borderline Personality Disorder As A Mental Health Nurse: Within A Forensic Inpatient Ward

1. Background

Mental health nurses represent the largest professional group working in mental health in the UK (Department of Health? 2006). Mental health nurses in the UK have all undertaken specific professional training and are registered with a professional regulatory body? the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The total number of registered mental health nurses in the UK is 47?000 (Department of Health? 2005). In England? mental health nurses work in a variety of settings and contexts? including inpatient environments? community mental health teams (CMHTs)? Crisis Assessment and Home Treatment? Continuing Needs Services? and with a range of clinical populations across the lifespan.

The UK policy context has seen the development of national standards for the organisation and delivery of mental health services? the National Service Framework for Mental Health? published by the Department of Health (1999). As part of this policy review? a systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions delivered by mental health nurses was carried out to attempt to determine the contribution of UK mental health nurses to the implementation and evaluation of effective interventions (full details are available at: http://www.nursing.manchester.ac.uk/projects/mentalhealthreview/). In this paper? we report on the methods and outcomes of this review. Specifically? the question this review sought to answer was 'What is the contribution of UK mental health nurses to the literature on effective psychological interventions that have been evaluated in randomised controlled trials (RCTs)?' In order to answer this question? methods of systematic reviewing of the literature were employed with an explicit focus on the ...
