BOOK CORNER DEVELOPMENT

Book Corner Development

Abstract

This research was positioned in a nursery setting, in an urban area. It is predominantly a Sikh setting that provides care and education for sixty children aged 3-4 years. This research is aimed to answer the question 'How can I develop a book corner to enhance the children's interests in reading and literature? It was acknowledged that the number of children choosing to access the book corner during the sessions were limited. This study addressed the question whether a change in educational settings could develop children's' interests in books and reading. The main objective was to investigate if an improvement in the book corner by making it more welcoming and bringing in a multicultural range of books in the book area; could develop these interests.

Ethical principles were permitted during all aspects of this research. This was achieved by gaining the consent of all participants and explaining what the research was about. The research methods used to address the rationale included observations, before and after the change. These were ideal for comparative purposes for the analysis. Questionnaires were also completed by the parents/care takers and staff members prior to the change. Key outcomes of this research demonstrated that due to the adult presence along with the resources, the number of children choosing to visit the book area increased. It was also evident that children, who often chose not to visit book corners, were attracted to the book area. The data also illustrated an increase in the number of children when an adult was not present. In conclusion, the actions were successful in addressing the original issues identified at the beginning of the project. The introduction of new resources with increased deployment of staff in the book area had increased the interests of the children in books and reading in the setting.

Action Research QF2040

This research is set in a nursery setting located in an urban area. It is a predominantly Sikh setting that provides care and education for children aged 3-4 years. The purpose of this research synthesis is to identify current views about the early literacy experiences provided through book corner, which is considered important for the development of early literacy skills. This will be accomplished by a reading review and adaptation of the experiences and outcomes considered vital by researchers, and practitioners. The aim of this study is to plan current approaches to promote children's interests in books. Reading habit is something that needs to be developed in the child from the very beginning. As the Early Years Foundation Stage (2008, p3) states 'Enabling Environments - A rich and varied environment supports children's learning and development'. The purpose is to discover answers to questions through the application of scientific procedures.
