The publication Black Elk Speaks was in writing in the early 1930's by scribe John G. Neihardt, after consulting the surgery man entitled Black Elk. Neihardt was currently a released author, and former to this specific narrative he was at work announcing a collection of verses titled Cycle of the West. Although he was primarily searching infor- mation about a peculiar Native American devout action that appeared at the end of the 19th 100 years for the deduction his verse assemblage, Neihardt was rather than gifted with the article of Black Elk's life. Black Elk's phrases would interpret much about the na- ture of wisdom as well as the inhabits of the Sioux and other tribes of that period.  

The cleric or holy man calling himself Black Elk was born in the December of 1863, to a family in the Ogalala band of the Sioux. Black Elk's family was well renowned, and he counted the famed Crazy Horse as a ally and cousin. Black Elk's family was likewise accepted as a family of shrewd men, with both his dad and grandfather themselves being holy men bearing the title Black Elk. The least old Black Elk shortly experienced a dream as a juvenile young man, a dream of the wisdom inherent in the soil that would direct him in the direction of his factual calling of being a wichasha wakon or holy man like his predecessors. Black Elk's childhood dream resided with him all through his life, and it offered him help and wisdom when he searched it. It is from the power of this dream, and the wisdom in his heart that Black Elk finally recognized his location as a foremost and wise man in the Ogalala band of the Sioux.  

The wisdom owned by Black Elk is directly present in his recollections of diverse courses wise by himself and by others. These tales ran the entire gambit of life knowledge from the most blameless actions of a young man in love, to the hard les- sons wise from the deceit of the whites. Through these tales a larger insight can be profited into the modes of the Sioux, as well as courses into the environment of all men. Most significant in these courses on the environment of man was wisdom, and in all of Black Elk's recollections somewhere a deeper wisdom can be found.
