Biometrics

Introduction

Biometrics is an example of technological advancement in the field of security and authentication regarding the identity theft of an individual. The word “Bio” refers to the biological studies and the word “metrics” represents the ways of measurement. It is basically the process of identifying or authenticating the identity of an individual with the help of behavioral or physical characteristics. The aim of developing the technology of biometrics is to provide access controls logically and physically at all the levels. The voice of an individual, the fingerprints, and the hand geometry are the physical characteristics of an individual while the behavioral characteristics of an individual encompass the writing style or the signature (Penny, 2002).

Thesis Statement

“The Biometrics is not the best way of protecting the society form the threats and risks of identity theft in this technologically advanced age”.

Discussion

Biometrics technology is used for the security concerns of identity protection as there are issues related to the identity theft. The basic step of theft is the stealing of the telephone numbers and the addresses. The issue of theft is of immense significance to the companies and even to the individuals. It is an irony that even the victim is unaware of the occurrence of the theft with respect to his identity. Therefore, technology has provided the best way of avoiding the identity theft to the individuals. It is unique in its characteristics and therefore cannot be duplicated as claimed. Its implication does not carry flaws, but requires strong coordination between the organization and the associated individuals. The sample of an individual's characteristics is taken multiple times for accurate results, and is then stored in the database for further procedures (www.biometrics.gov).

First Argument

The technology of biometrics is not transparent in terms of maintaining the trust of the individuals regarding the protection of their confidential data. As nothing is impossible in this world; therefore, there are chances of data theft by any possible means, and if the data is theft, biometrics will be no more a blessing but a curse at the time (Thieme, n.d).

The theft of biometric data could be severely drastic to an individual as none can get back or alter the physical traits after losing them. The theft of retina trait of a person can never be returned back to him; neither can he change his retina. Then where will be the secured aspect of the biometric in these situations and circumstances. This theft will not be an issue for the individuals only, but the organization or the company will also be at the greater level of risk in this regard. The company will not be able to detect that the person using or accessing the biometrics is the real one or an effort of criminal masquerading.

It is a fact that in many cases, the cyber criminals have gained access to the confidential data of the people with their master minds. The cyber criminals do not require the use of an individual's fingers or the retina or any other personal ...
