Biology QuestionsQuestion No. 1

Matter, Elements, and Chemical Compounds

Matter is a mixture composed of two or more elements, for example steel that is composed of mixture of manganese, cobalt, carbon, and iron. Matter does not denote any specific compound or element.

The elements are pure substances that are formed by a single kind of atoms. The best way to know that is an element is a set to any periodic table, in which each square represents a different element, according to their atomic number. (Hartwell, Hopfield, Leibler, & Murray, 1999).

In contrast, compounds which are pure substances but are formed by several elements, two or more, and which have a unique structure that characterizes the same elements that are formed. The compounds may be separated into elements through a series of processes.

Question No. 2

Ionic bond - is to move one or more valence electrons of the carbon atoms of the electronegative element. Electron donating atom becomes a cation, and the electron accepting atom becomes an anion. The resulting ions are attracted to different electrostatic forces to form an ionic bond.

Covalent bonding is created by a shared pair of electrons (single bond), two shared electron pairs (double bond) or three joint pairs of electrons (triple bond) by two atoms, each of which provides the common doublet (or doublets ), the same number of unpaired electrons (Cappuccino, & Sherman, 1996).

Hydrogen bond - it is this interaction (usually weak) between covalently bound hydrogen atom and the other belonging to a strongly electronegative atom of the molecule, with a total free electron pair. Hydrogen atom (proton) may be connected at the same time with two carbon atoms, if they have a small size and high electronegativity (Cappuccino, & Sherman, 1996).

Question No. 3

Major Classes of Biomolecules

Proteins - also known as enzymes, are the building blocks of body. They're comprised of long chains of amino acids, which are known as polypeptides that create different sorts of protein.

Nucleic Acids - comprises of two kinds of organic particles: RNA and DNA (Forbes, Sahm, Weissfeld, Scott, & Bailley, 2002). They consist of information regarding genetic which is needed to construct new cells and proteins. Nucleic acids are extremely multifaceted particles which are made up of nucleo-tides.

Carbohydrates - they're organic compounds, consisting only carbon atoms, oxy gen, and hydrogen. They function to give energy to organisms and cells. Few classes of carbohydrates are; monosaccharides, and polysaccharides (Hartwell, Hopfield, Leibler, & Murray, 1999).

Lipids - they're fatty acid, function to provide help to structure the cell and reserve energy. Wax, steroids, oils, lard, and fat are all categorized as lipids, as they're not completely soluble in water.

Question No. 4

Molecules of Water

Vapor - this form of water consist of more energetic molecules than other forms. In gas form, molecules are more far apart from each other due to higher level of energy and react quickly.

Water - this form of water is fluid and wet, this most familiar form of ...
