Like carbon and nitrogen, oxygen is also a basic element of life. It is very abundant element on our earth. In elemental form in atmosphere, it is found to the extent of 25 per cent. In addition to constituting about 21 per cent of the atmosphere, oxygen also occurs in combination as oxides in the earth's crust, in carbon dioxide and in water. Oxygen occurs as oxides of most metals and silicon in the earth's crust and also as carbonate, sulphate, nitrate and other minerals.
