Pafnuty Lvovich Chebyshev was born on 16 May 1821 on a farm of his father in Okatovo region of Kaluga, western Russia, in a family of noble ancestry. His father, Lev Pavlovich Chebyshev was a military officer who fought against Napoleon. Some of his nine brothers continued the military tradition of his father, Vladimir, the youngest, was general and professor at the Artillery Academy of Saint Petersburg.
Education
His mother, Agrafena Ivanovna, taught him to read and write, while her cousin Sújarieva taught arithmetic and French, which was the popular subject of that time. In 1832, the Chebyshev family moved to Moscow, where he continued his primary education and also completed his secondary education at home. In Moscow Pafnuty mathematics and physics involved in PN Pogorevsky, one of the best teachers in Moscow and also wrote one of the most popular elementary mathematics texts of the time, which certainly inspired his pupil giving a strong background of mathematics. So, Chebyshev was well prepared for the study of Mathematical Sciences at got admission in 1837, at the University of Moscow. Chebyshev always expressed great respect for his teacher, attributing a large influence on its subsequent mathematical development.
Chebyshev worked as a professor at the University of St. Petersburg for 35 years. Since 1847, he was appointed as the assistant professor at the university. When he retired from teaching he devotes himself exclusively to areas of research. The doors of his home were open to all those who needed a query or wish to report on their research or receive any advice on any subject. At the age of 73, Chebyshev ceased to exist for the assistance of people and conducted regular consultation with visitors.
