Bilingual education literally refers to a curriculum that teaches literacy in two distinct languages. The term, however, is extended to any instruction in a child's native language other than English and encompasses the rights of any immigrants to have their child instructed in his or her native language (Johnson, 01). Bilingual education in the United States dates to the early nineteenth century, when a number of states supported education in German or French.
