Benevenuto Cellini is a very famous goldsmith. Towards the end of his life, he thought that he should write a little on his life. There were several reasons why he wanted to write an autobiography. Above all, since he was such a successful man he wanted to leave his memory behind, he wanted people to read about his life and get inspiration from him and remember him as he wanted to be remembered. In addition, it was a very good way of becoming famous. In order to ensure that people knew him even after he left he wrote a very inspiring autobiography which would last through ages unlike himself. He may bid adieu to his worldly existence but his name will remain (Cellini, 1999).

In doing so, he has given a fictional account of his family background. He has related it back to Julius Caesar in Florence. He is a descendant of the great man. He started from a very humble background and has moved up to achieve all that he has. It would not be wrong to say that he is a self made man. He has made efforts for himself and prove his talent for the world to see. He was a family guy in that he loved all his family members and cared for them greatly. However, he chose his own path of life. He did not give in and did not submit to his father's requests.
