ABSTRACT

This dissertation will cover the use of Building Information Model in the UK construction industry and the legal issues that hinder a full collaborative and integration in the UK construction Industry. The detailed definition of Building Information Modelling is provided in this dissertation. A detailed analysis has also been provided regarding the traditional method of working in the UK construction industry and how Building Information Modelling changes the traditional construction method in UK. This study uses primary as well as secondary methods for the collection of data. For the collection of secondary data, past research related to the topic was used. This included various scholarly and peer reviewed articles and journals. This secondary data helped to understand the BIM technology and its background with complete command. However, for the collection of primary data, a questionnaire was designed that was based on 22 questions. These questions included structured and unstructured questions. The questionnaire was distributed among 100 participants who were a part of construction industry and had been using BIM technology. However, I was able to get 55% rate of response i.e. 55 questionnaires. The questionnaire helped to determine the ground reality of the use of BIM technology and its implications. The data collected from the questionnaire was statistically analysed with the use of Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS). The findings from the statistical analysis then proved to be the base for the determination of results and conclusions. The research concludes that there are several particular requirements with inspections, structures etc which relate to the global code of building. A BIM must be capable of identifying locations of project in order to meet regional code of buildings, particularly for the larger projects of construction. Complete input from the customers, having the right to use the drawings can be problematic. Guaranteeing of drawing might prove to be complex if 30 distinct individuals have put in drawings, how the professionals would be capable of verifying that they observed what function had been carried out in the building information model. BIM's future in the UK construction industry would be as much significant as traditional CAD programs. It would need several years of collecting data and gathering databases for the engineers as well as for the architects with traditional details of construction and side of construction from collecting actual data of productivity. The UK government has designed a plan for the implementation of BIM in the construction industry by 2016. The plan has been supervised by Chief construction adviser Paul Morrell. The major impact of the plan for the construction industry is that, the BIM technology has been made compulsory for all the construction companies by 2016. Under this plan, all appropriate will fall under 3D collaborative environment. In addition to this, the government has established a separate department that has been formed with the coordination of software vendors for the purpose of developing ...
