Summary: For the continuous improvement of quality the most essential tool recognized so far is benchmarking. There are a large number of publications available from various authors that have reflected their thoughts in enhancing this technique. The literature reviews on benchmarking has been attempted by a few authors in the past as well. While considering the contribution in the modern time period, this article is attempted as a comprehensive review.

Structural Aspects of the Article: The article closely reviews the literature related to benchmarking in a way that it would assist the practitioners, academicians and researchers, this document can help them in applicability, development and growth in the application of this technique.

Key Parts of Article: The author has carefully examined the literature available on the following subjects benchmarking: fundamentals or general aspects; under this category all the publications were related to the concepts of benchmarking in fundamental and very general way, which was designed for the basic level readers. These fundamentals are covering in greater extent regarding the disciplines of growth stage and introduction.
