Behavior Modification Techniques

Thesis Statement

“Behavior modification techniques do not have only positive outcomes these techniques have some adverse effects too” (Deffenbacher, 2008).

Introduction

Behavior modification is the way of influencing human behavior in order to change undesirable personal behavior. It is based on the treatment of the relationship between changes in environment and individual behavior in relation to social class, family, and the overall economic and political situation. The issue of the adaptation of the misfit problem was derived from the appliance of the concluding results that were derived from experimental theory and the learning theory (Kelly and Franklin, 2011).

Behavior modification or use of research and theories of experimental psychology are used to influence behavior, in order to resolve social and personal problems and enhance human functioning. It can be said that learning theories do not speculate on unconscious causes and rather base their study on irrational symtoms being simple or learned habits. "Baer (1960) offered a study of applied behavior analysis, a model for learning theory. For many researchers, the emphasis of applied behavior analysis lay largely in improving social problems and not finding the causes of these problems (Deffenbacher, 2008). Moreover, as Baer applied his model of applied behavior analysis on Behavioral Development in children, it can be said to be a useful tool for dealing with the issue of behavior modification of children aged 2-7 with autism, which is the focus of this study.

Discussion

Several treatments have been designed to treat autism, some more successfully than others and some with little or no result. This paper will be useful in explaining the treatment known for behavior modification that, to date is the most accepted and which has had better results, especially in situations where the child is given several instructions to follow and is monitored. However, it should be noted that the implementation of a variety of treatment methods in this regard can be said to be an affective procedure for dealing with the issue. This is said bceause it is a proven fact that best progress can be achieved through the adoptation of a mixture or variety of treatments, with each variety aimed at the development of some specific areas (e.g., speech) (Campbell, 2010).

The systematic study of animal learning has hugely contributed in this field of psychology, by contributing several effective techniques for establishing, correcting or modifying behavior in children of age 2-7 having problem of autism. ...
