“Becoming a Writer” by Baker

Introduction

In “Becoming a Writer,” the author talks about his autobiographical account of his early decision to become a writer. Well, Russell Baker did not like to write until his third year in high school when he realized that his weakness is writing compositions that took him hold, and he feels bored about everything that is part of English subjects. In his third year of English Baker was assigned to Mr. Fleagle to be his English teacher. According to the author Mr. Fleagle was sixty or seventy and prim to a fault. He wore primly severe eye glasses, his hair was combed and cut, he wore vest suits with neckties, he had a straight nose, and his behavior of speaking is correct. Mr. Fleagle loved Macbeth and he wanted the class to love it too. However, he could not convice them to love it. One day Mr. Fleagle read a passage about Macbeth and everyone in the class start laughing quietly then the teacher stopped reading. He said, “There is nothing funny, boys, about giving suck to a babe. It is the essence of motherhood, don't you see?” From that day on Mr. fleagle kept saying, “don't you see”.

Discussion

The title that he came up with leads him to extraordinary things. When Baker and his relatives ate Spaghetti at Belleville, it was the first time for some of them to eat Spaghetti. The laughing and the humor that he had that night made him want to write about the Spaghetti for his essay. Therefore, he wanted to write for himself; not for Mr. Fleagle. The night was almost gone when he finished writing and he did not have time to write a proper essay for Mr. Fleagle. He did not have any choice, only to turn in ...
