The Treatment Intervention of Autistic Child

Introduction

The word “autism” denotes a number of conditions that appear in childhood. Autism is an extremely debilitating developmental disorder of function of the brain. It has three predominant symptoms: problem in verbal and nonverbal communication, strictly limited or unusual interests and activities and impaired social interaction (Sternberg, 2003).

Many researches show that autism results from some certain abnormalities in the structure of the brain or its function. For instance, the scans of a brain show that its structure and its shape in an autistic child are not similar to that of normal child. A number of studies have established a strong link between medical problems, heredity and genetics. These studies have also shown that not a single known psychological factor in development of children has been exhibited to cause autism. The link of autism with genetics is backed by the study showing that, in number of families a pattern of autism or ASDs is found (Monique, 2006).

Demographics

The exact occurrence rate of autism is not identified because of the yearly changes in the diagnostic criteria for this disease. Different studies have determined the different estimates of occurrence of Autism. The recent study with more inclusive criteria has estimated that one in every 500 children is affected with this disease. More than half a million people in U.S. fit these diagnostic criteria for Autism. Autism commonly occurs 3 times more in boys than girls. While boys are more affected but girls with this disease are inclined to be more severely affected and they have low IQ. The causes of these variations are not identified. This disease is found in people from all races, social and economic background (Fergus, 2005).

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of autism requires obtaining the development history of child and viewing and examining the communication skills, social interaction and overall behavior of the child. Since the symptoms of this disease are so differing, the condition may remain undiagnosed for some time. In the diagnosis of autism, there is no such medical test because of which the condition is often missed in non- severe cases or cases when handicaps are there. Autism is confused with other disease like fragile-syndrome, untreated phenylketonuria, tuberous sclerosis. To overcome this issue, there are special screening tools that assist physicians in diagnosing the autism. At times, medical tests are helpful in ruling ...
