Australia's Involvement in Iraq War



Introduction

After the terrorists attacks of 9/11 the scenario of the world changed rapidly. Powers of the world started paying attention towards issues that needed solution to prevent anything similar that could occur in the coming future. Perhaps it is the ground reason due to which NATO and the allied forces still are fighting in Afghanistan and are alert for the prevention of any of the possible mishaps. Powers around the world have fears that some of the negative elements in the society can get access to the weapons of mass destruction. Since the deadly ending of World war 2, in which Japan faced miserable consequences of nuclear attacks, powers around the world are making considerable efforts to prevent such a major human catastrophe that the world experienced after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That bombing by American troops was much needed to end the long war that was causing threat to the overall humanity in the world for which two cities of Japan had to sacrifice. This sacrifice was perhaps due to the own rigidness of Japanese government that was constantly attacking American land frequently.

However, since then the world has changed considerably, Soviet Union that enjoyed the status of super power, is no longer Soviet Union. Even the number of nations who have officially with them weapons of mass destruction has increased. Nevertheless, the world is facing constant threats from several terrorists groups who want to get their hands on weapons of mass destruction. Some of the countries whose intentions to get the nuclear energy seems purely the use of Nuclear weapons include Iran and North Korea most notably. Prior to them, Iraq was a country that had a strong desire to have mass destruction weapons and some statements from the previous dictator Saddam Hussain, suggested the same. There were hints from around the world, which suggested Iraq possession of weapons of mass destruction. The threats of their outrage were severe due the style of leadership Saddam Hussain adopted. The world and the powers surrounding it in the modern era, did not wanted a scenario similar to that of the world war, and wanted to end the speculation by locating the chemical weapons that Saddam's government claimed they had (Dobell, 2007, pp. 16-19). Officials of the previous government of Iraq indicated various times about the possible attack on Israel by the help of their weapons. Since America never wanted a war based upon nuclear weapons, they requested official operation from United Nations who denied it initially. This was the time when America collaborated with its allies mainly Australia and Great Britain to disarm the military led government in Iraq and search for the chemical weapons. Australia's intention to invade Iraq at that time was considered as an effort to keep its alliance with the Americans and disarm the Saddam's regime.
