Introduction

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder associated with the behavior that affects millions of children worldwide, sometimes even progressing into adulthood. It is sometimes hard to differentiate between abnormal and regular behavior of child as the symptoms vary for different children. The only similarity between affected children is that they are consistent, pervasive and existent. This portray everywhere they go, be it at school, in the home, or in the public. Besides, none of children with this disorder are able to focus or pay attention to any work that does not reward them quickly and easily distracted. They also have poor social cognition and do not adapt well in the society as their impulsiveness lead to difficulties in following rules and instructions. (Martin; 2010). This is one of the most widely used and effective treatment methods available for ADHD. Stimulants elevate the arousal level of the central nervous system, by affecting the amount or efficiency of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and nor epinephrine that are available for cellular communication in the brain. These neurotransmitters spread throughout the brain and play a critical role in a variety of functions, including arousal, attention, concentration, motor planning and motor control, to name a few.

Although stimulants may be effective in curing the majority of ADHD patients, some individuals do not respond to it or experienced unendurable side effects. For individuals like this, the prescription of non-stimulant medication. For now, the non-stimulant drugs available on the market are Atomoxetine and Guanfacine. (Paige; Et. al;2003)

Antidepressants are effective in treating ADHD patients with mood disturbance such as depression or anxiety. Antidepressants usually give twice daily, usually in the morning and in the evening.(Faraone;2009)

The thesis statement is that whether stimulant or non- stimulant medication a more effective solution to children diagnosed with ADHD?My research question focuses on whether there is a significant difference in the children treatment diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) according to non-stimulant and stimulant medication. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a label given to students that have a severe problem with attention and impulsiveness. Male children are the ones usually diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD usually affects boys more often than girls. The behavior problems usually develop by the time the kids start school. ADHD is hard to diagnose. (Paige;Et. al; 2003)

Discussion

The research question is that can intensive behavioral therapy be a more effective way of treatment than stimulant, non-stimulant and antidepressant medication for ADHD diagnosed children.I hypothesized that there is a significant difference between parents choosing stimulant over non- stimulant medication as an effective solution to children diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD has many symptoms, but the main core symptoms are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
