Introduction and History

AT&T is a telecommunications multinational corporation with its headquarters located in Whitacre Tower, at Dallas, Texas. It happens to be the biggest provider of fixed telephony and mobile telephony in the Unites States of America. It also provides subscription for broadband television services. It ranks at number three among the largest businesses in Texas. According to a survey, it stands tall among all the major companies in the world, at seventeen in terms of market value and the thirteenth biggest non oil company in the world. According to another survey, it happens to be the twentieth largest operator of mobile telecom with over hundred million customers, all over the world, (AT&T Business strategy, 2013). The market is divided between the following competitors and technology, distinguish in nature.

The history of this company goes back to Graham Bell who was the founder of telephone and the company, 'Bell Telephone Company'. American Telephone and Telegraph Company was one of the many subsidiaries of the Bell's company, which was launched in 1885 and acquired the Bell Company in 1899, following certain legal reasons. AT&T was quite successful in developing a proper network in America. It held the American government phone service monopoly which was authorized. The monopoly was called the 'Bell system'. In 2012, according to a survey, there were more than 15000 retail outlets for AT&T, including more than two thousand stores owned and operated by the company itself.

The monopoly of the AT&T came to an end somewhere in 1984. This led the company to turn its subsidiaries into single companies, which became to be known as Baby bells or more popularly, Regional Bell Operating Companies.
