Asthma

Introduction

Health issue that I am going to talk on is asthma and its causation. Reason for choosing this topic is that, at present many people suffer from this disease which at time can end up taking their lives if medical treatment is not taken on time or on immediate basis. With my topic, I wanted to know more about this disease as many people ignore the impact of this disease when they are caught up with this disease. Impact of asthma is really harmful on the population as its sudden attacks can cause panic in the surrounding and even among the family members. If not treated up to the merit, this disease can turn out to be very deadly for the person suffering from it (Murphy, 2008).

Discussion

Allergic respiratory diseases have increased significantly in recent years. In particular, the increase in asthma is alarming. In United States of America, it is estimated that almost 5 percent of the population are affected. Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease. Current estimates show: 5 to 12 percent of children are affected (Kates, 2010).

If an attack occurs, it becomes difficult for the affected person to breathe. This leads to shortness of breath. Asthma is a repeated and sudden restriction of the airways. The narrowing is caused by inflammation of the lining of the bronchi. Tough mucus also narrows the airways. This leads to severe respiratory distress and coughing. The shortness of breath is not, as one might assume, caused by the fact that those concerned can breathe bad. Rather, the spasms of bronchial muscles leads to the "stale" air cannot escape from the lungs. For this reason, individuals may not be able to breathe and then leads to a lack of oxygen.
