Informal Norms, Sanctions and Socialization

Part # 1

When a group of people are parting from the mainstream culture of society, it is called as sub-culture. Like mainstreams culture, people of this group have beliefs, values, norms, sanctions and language but it is different from the national culture. It is distinguishable from the main culture and sometimes membership in the sub-cultures requires applying a symbolic and distinctive style. In mainstream society, these styles appear alien. Mostly, sub-cultures in society are formed for any purpose and other are formed on the basis of race, language, ethnic, age and sex base. In every society, there are laws which govern the society's behavior. Some laws are formal which are properly codified and violation of them causes heavy punishments and fines.

Informal Norms and Sanctions

On the contrary, there are some informal beliefs which members of society are considering to follow as they are the part of popular or sub-culture (Liefbroer & Billari, 2010). These beliefs are called the norms of society. Formal norms are ideas or practices which majority of people in society is accepting and breach of these norms is seen with filthy eyes. On the other hand, there are informal norms which are not heavily punished when there is violation. For example, at food restaurants, people are lined up and no one force them to remain in the line, it is the informal norm to be civilized at public places. In the same way, there are informal sanctions which reward or punish for the violation of laws and norms. These are not approved by any authority in the society, but it is the personal reaction of individual against any ill-treatment. Continuing the above example, the violation of lined up do not cause strict action but every man in line reacts in his own way. The punishment for the violation of informal laws is expected.

Elements of Informal Norms

These are not representing the standards of society, but they are voluntarily followed.

Informal norms are like beliefs which majority of people in the society is accepting.

Violation is not too much strict and most of times, violators are left without saying anything.

We learn informal laws from the society by observing other members and training at social institutions, it is also called socialization.
