Introduction

The topic under study critically examines the key organizational issues that contributed to the situations at Nelsons restaurant. Based on theses analysis, the paper includes strategy planning for changes within a restaurant “Fishies”. The strategic planning involves strategic focus as well as, practices that be implemented.

Nelsons had been a moneymaking idea for some years, but all pleasant things end eventually. Business had been declining gradually over the last few years. At one time, the Carvery could have almost 2000 customers each weekend. When the numbers kept going down, the owner realized that something drastic would have to be done.

Background of Nelson

Nelsons used to be a popular restaurant. At the time, it was the first carvery restaurant in the area, offering substantial, quality food relatively inexpensively. Nelson achieved this by aiming for constant service and high volume trade, with the chance for 3 or 4 sittings of three course meals each evening. Every evening there was a choice of at least three roast meats, and diners would help themselves to a wide variety of hot and cold vegetables, salads and other accompaniments, with self-service desserts too, including a popular soft ice-cream machine. When the disco opened, soon afterwards, it boasted one of the first provincial laser light shows in the country.

Strengths

One of the biggest strength of the Nelsons restaurant was its reputation. Nelson restaurant had a great reputation in the market, and this was a major strength of Nelson. The management of Nelson could have simply utilized this strength to manage change and once again attract their clients. This was a major strength of Nelson as they used to enjoy great number of customers in their hotels before the downturn.

Weaknesses

The major weakness of Nelson was the lack of communication, lack of planning, and a lack of vision from the management of Nelson. When the management of Nelson had decided to implement a change in their restaurant, they never made complete plans regarding the change that they would implement in their organization. According to Bartunek (1993, 89), the presence or absence of a planned process for the change may be a source of difficulty in the management of change in an organization. While, the existence of a strategy is definitely a plus, a quality of it may either help or destroy the change implementation. If the plan is not realistic, not built on consistently updated information and agreed on with the followers, there are decent chances that it will destroy undertaken efforts.

The other weakness of Nelson was the lack of a vision for change in their restaurant, which had led to a lack of communication and other problems. According to Kotter (1995, 14), vision is one of the factors very often emphasized by leadership scholars as an essential part of leading. Thus, lack of vision is a significant problem. How can one lead, control, manage change if there is no point to refer to, if people have no idea of where the corporation is headed? ...
