If love of Desdemona from Othello was the submissive love generated by seeing his face in his mind and fueled by his joy in his honor and parts brave, love of Othello to Desdemona is quite different. Although later we will talk about their sense of joy of being united with her after the perilous journey to Cyprus with enthusiastic words as "too much of joy (2.1.197), not because he feels he is happy his "soul mate," but rather that he loved her because she fell in love with him through his stories.
So they loved each other for different reasons. This is something that invites reflection. So much emphasis today is placed on "reciprocity" or "egalitarianism" (although that word tends to rise and fall in years 1970 and 1980) that couples may have impression that love is love in same way and for same reason. But Othello's love for her does not say anything about his perception of her as the woman, appreciation of its finer qualities, his sense that fails to understand anything about his past or present. His love for her seems derivative, secondary, like the comdian love people because he laughs at his jokes.
