Assignment 5

Question 1

Receptive language is the understanding and comprehension of something read or spoken. Expressive language is the expression of thoughts in the form of words either spoken or written. Some children have problems with either of the languages, while some have problems with both forms of the language (Dunlap, 2009).

Children who have good receptive skills can easily identify what is being communicated. They easily comprehend jokes, morals, puns, and anything that is knowledge that is being passed through the language. These children easily hear the language being communicated and understand what is being communicated through the words (Dunlap, 2009).

Receptive language can be improved through conversation, radio, reading books, watching TV, and audio CD's. The best method to improve this form of language is to make the child communicate with friends and parents. Observation is also a good way to foster the child. After observations, the child should be asked probing questions in order to develop his understanding of the environment.

Expressive language, on the other hand, is how children communicate his thoughts or ideas. Those who find it easy to express words are usually sharp in nature. These children have considered intelligent and have strong communication skills. It can be improved by making the child to express his feelings and describing his observations. Since most children like to talk and observe their surroundings, it is easier for them to learn this language.

Both these languages are very different from each other. Even the methods to improve children's skills in these languages are very different. One is based on understanding while the other is based on expressions. Sharp children are usually good in both forms of languages.
