ASSIGNMENT 3

Service Improvement: Evidence Based Practice

Abstract

Evidence Based Practice (EBP) refers to a decision-making process which integrates the best available research, clinician expertise, and customer characteristics in order to improve the quality of health services provided to patients in healthcare settings. Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions for individual patients. The practice of evidence-based practice means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external evidence from systematic research is available, in combination with the preferences, needs and expectations of the patient. When we investigate whether our actions are based on sound scientific research, will certainly not for all our actions data are available. Evidence-based practice seeks to improve the quality of care through the gap between research and practice. There has been extensive research into cardiopulmonary resuscitation by different researches and the findings were translated into evidence-based guidelines.

Service Improvement: Evidence Based Practice

Introduction

Evidence Based Practice is the most effective way of practicing healthcare by effective decision making. It incorporates individual clinical expertise with the external clinical evidence based on the systematic research. Healthcare practitioners and nurses need to take their decisions on the basis of evidences taken from past researches. These evidences provide guidelines to healthcare providers in providing particular care for patients in healthcare settings. Clinical expertise can be considered as the practitioners' experience, skills and education that provide authentic evidence. It has been observed that the best clinical evidences are those which have been conducted on the basis of using sound methodology (Sackett, 1996, pp.71-72). EBP is defined as the process that uses the current best evidence from clinical research, clinical expertise and individual choice of patients to improve their quality of life by providing quality healthcare services and treatments to patients.

The research report consists of the details of EBP, its relevance, implications in healthcare and social work and the research that has been conducted on the guidelines of EBP.

Discussion

EBP in Healthcare

The evidence-based practice (EBP) is the use of best available scientific research in the management of individual patients. Mainly used in medicine, the term "medicine based on proven facts" or "Evidence based medicine". In a method for teaching medicine, EBP has become a method to solve medical problems facing doctors in their daily practice. But when we consult the medical literature sites today, there are more published work by nurses and other caregivers (http://www.cche.net, 1992, pp. 268). This means that while this method should no longer be confined to physicians and medical practice. Evidence based nursing is a working method appropriate for any caregiver who wants to develop care research and improve professional practice. There are some barriers which restrict the implication of EBP in medical practices. They are of two kinds: the organization and care givers themselves:

The organization: it is a key factor to influence more or less use of research. In addition, the attitude of managers and care managers is also crucial. Finally, we note that the work environment does not encourage ...
