Current Guidelines, Legislation, Procedures and Policies for Safeguarding Children

In UK, the current guidelines and legislation that are applicable:

Children Act 1989 was brought in to improvement and simplifies the present laws safeguarding children in the England at the time. It provided children equal wishes, feelings and rights, along with that their wellbeing is paramount. In addition, it made apparent that local authorities have a responsibility to offer services for children and their families who are in need.

Children Act 2004 amends the Children Act 1989, and institutes Board of Local Safeguarding Board with the authority to ensure that the NHS, police, and social services work in collaboration to shield any child at risk. CAF (Common Assessment Framework) that employs a holistic approach to assess, identify and meet children's needs in order to attain five outcomes: achieve economic well-being, make a positive contribution, enjoy and achieve, stay safe and be healthy (Bainham, 2005, pp.4-58).

The legislation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all children have the fundamental right to be safeguarded from impairment; whereas being able to develop and learn into adults.

Section three of the Early Years Foundation Stage 2008 evidently states what settings should do to protect young people and make sure adults' suitability that interacts with children.

Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010 provides guidance that describes how organisations, individuals and practitioners require to work collectively and completely understand their duties and responsibilities; whereas, being able to work jointly to protect children and their families.

The purpose of Protection of Children Act 1999 is to make sure that there is a system in place that keeps the record of people recognized as incompatible to work with young people.

The act of Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 was instituted after the murders of Soham and obliges that all people working with young people and vulnerable people must list them with the Independent Safeguarding Authority to protect children against vulnerable adults.

Safeguarding Children Policy includes a Children's Rights and Entitlements Statement policy statement featuring how to work with children, parents and the community to make sure the children's safety. This includes promoting young people rights to be strong, creating, listening and resilient an environment that boost the morale of children to develop a sense of self-confidence, independence and self-esteem. Other legislation and guidelines include Health and Safety Policy ranged from daily risk assessments to National Standard of Safety and Health, Criminal Records Bureau, and Staffing and Employment Policy (Lindon, 2003, pp.14-240).

Child Protection
