Embracing Survival: A Grounded Theory Study of Parenting Children who have Sustained Burns
Introduction
This assignment aims at the critique of the article Embracing survival: A grounded theory study of parenting children who have sustained burns, written by Vinitha Ravindran, Gwen R. Rempel and Linda Ogilvie. The article was published in December 2012. The assignment also aims at the ways that the parents provide support to their children who have been a victim of burn injuries. The research took place in India because of the fact that the low income and the middle income countries do not pay much attention to addressing the child who has underwent such burn injuries and need constant care on the part of their parents. The parents are not educated and aware enough to bring their children for follow up in such situations in these countries. The research paper threw light on the ways of parenting in India, especially when the children or a child of them is subject to injuries related to burning. The authors of the research paper interviewed twenty-two family members all of whom had children with burn injuries. The number of children who had burn injuries was 12. The analysis was done which comprised of comparison of the responses that were gathered through the interviews. A review of the responses and the data collected showed that the parents were concerned about the process of survival, rather embracing survival. Embracing survival for the parents included the suffering of the trauma of the burn injuries along with the suffering child, sustaining and trying for the survival of the child with burn injuries, and helping and protecting the child from any disfigurement or scarring as a result of the burn injuries that he has. The parents, father and mother, did not have much support from the family members or health professionals, rather they made a team themselves and did their best to help their child with the burn injuries. Meeting the needs of the burn injured child, and assessing them is a vital role that is to be played by the parents of the injured child. They are the vital components that are needed for the care of the children with burn injuries and the parents need to be alive to such responsibilities that they have towards their child having burn related injuries.
