Introduction

Karp (1996) in his book confessed his battle with depression, in which he stated the divide between social structure and emotional health. The main argument in his work was to highlight that despite how well his life was going and the achievements that he had obtained, he was depressed most of the time. Thus, through his work Karp (1996) presented a phenomenology of his work, where his theory was expressed in terms of the equation that medicalization, disconnection, post-modernization leads to personal dislocation.

This paper aims to discuss critically the components of this theory equation presented by Karp (1996). This is discussed in the following sections.

Discussion

According to Perring (1998) Karp's work is considered pioneer in terms that it highlights the roots and relationship of increase in depression since World War II. Moreover, Karp also links mental illness with different aspects of the modern society. With respect to medicines, Perring (1998) comments how Karp highlights the deliberation process undertaken by individuals with respect to taking anti-depressants. The pro's and con's are clearly highlighted which makes it take on the form of self-help for people suffering from depression.

Similarly, Folk-Williams (2011) notes that depression is not something profound in terms of how people perceive or think it is, as majority of individuals tend to associate depression with negative or desolate emotions or feelings. However, any person could become depressed regardless of their emotional or mental state. Depression may not be caused by any external stimuli but can keep on coming back on its own without any obvious reason. In addition, Folk-Williams (2011) express that in Karp's theory of depression in four broad phases. These are highlighted as below:
