At this position in The Iliad, Achilles, one of the Greeks' supreme assets during the Trojan combat, has abandoned the battleground because of the disappointment with Agamemnon's immense arrogance. Patroclus was given the famous armor by him, a member Myrmidon and a best friend of his. Hector, commander of the Trojan armies, took benefits of Achilles' absence and has started to force the Greeks towards their beach head military camp. The gods in Greek mythology get in the way and turn fate towards it's to be expected, unavoidable direction.
As Achilles, person in charge of the Myrmidon soldiers, persistent to be in a mood over his exploitation by Agamemnon by moving back his army from the attack on Troy, the Achaean (Greek) army faced intense hindrance at the hands of Trojan guard under Hector. Patroclos, Achilles' servant and one of the best friends, pleaded Achilles to let him to put on Achilles' armor and head the Myrmidons at the battle field, so in order to inspire the Greeks and to fear the enemy with this trick. Achilles agreed, but he put a condition to Patroclos that he must limit his efforts to staving off the assault and not to follow the rival anymore. Patroclos battled fine, and the Achaeans achieved few achievements, but Patroclos ignored his undertaking to Achilles and moved further to give chase to the Trojans in anticipation of Hector meet head-on with Patroclos, and kill him with the conviction that it is Achilles. This was when Hector killed Patroclos with the help of the god Apollo and a small Trojan combatant named Euphorbos. And this was the reason of the death of Patroclus (Waterfield et.al, 2012).
