2) Revolutions in the Arab World

As in other successful uprisings, there is not just one simple reason why the spark of discontent fans into flames of revolution. Movements like the Arab Spring arise from a number of interrelated political, economic, and social reasons. Some of them are pure and at the heart of what every human being wants: economic and social justice; access to education and jobs; a real sense of self-determination; and a government that does not harass, repress, or humiliate the individual because of economic status, religion, or ethnicity. Others may be political in nature, such as a philosophical opposition to authoritarianism and a desire for democratic reform. In some cases, individuals or groups may want to overthrow a government to take power themselves, install their cronies in government positions, and reap the economic benefits. In the case of the Arab Spring, many commentators were concerned that some protesters wanted to install Islamist regimes that would impose draconian Islamic laws that would threaten the women rights and religious minorities' rights and oppose American foreign policy goals. In the worst case, American officials feared that terrorist groups would gain power in these countries and pursue violence against Western countries. (Goldstein, 83)
