Background of the Study
In year 2007, Economic recession that still exists has casted irreversible harm on some major economies of the world. In the time duration of 2007-08, the developing countries received indirect negative effects of the crisis. They had to receive some serious implications although they were not directly involved in the predicament. In the mentioned context, the hospitality and tourism industry got a few exceptional damages. Several developing countries make their major portion of money through the promotion and inculcation of hospitality and tourism industry as in the case of Sri Lanka. The most unfortunate factor was the occurrence of civil war situation in the country including communism, insurgence and poverty which have added to the miseries of the country. Aitken Spence Hotels Holdings PLC (ASHH PLC) has proved to be one of the most successful companies that attempted to make and actually made profits out such bad times.
At present, in Sri Lanka there are no more than twenty-five 5-star hotels out of which ASHH PLC owns the nine hotels. Since 1968, they have been on their journey in Sri Lanka. They have established unique examples of gaining the understanding of the environment and sustaining the risk in the business in the worst times of recession. Their latest venture in Sri Lanka is the “Heritance Kandalama”. It has been evident in the case study that the prime elements behind the success of this unique unit which is under ASHH PLC panel as a fact has been formulated and designed as in quite unconventional and differing rationale. This concept has been derived from stereo-type infrastructure aiming to establish 5-star eco-hotels. The main competitors of ASHH PLC, Sri Lanka consist of Hilton Hotels Corporation, Palm Garden Hotels Nanayakkara, Eden Hotels and Taj Lanka Hotels.
The year 1991 proved to be a decisive one for the corporation as they arrived at a much thoughtful decision of expanding their existence within all the three paradigms of cultural triangle destinations in states like Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. The geographical presence of Sri Lanka is comprised of wet locations and lands and dried lands in north. In Sri Lanka, the lower part has Sinhalese population and the upper part has mostly Buddhist population. The case study shows the existence of effective and efficient department of human resources.
