Low Self-Esteem Is Related to Aggression, Antisocial Behavior, and Delinquency
The paper relates to the field of Psychological Science. The basic research problem of the article is a linkage between the debatable linkage between the self-esteem and the expressive problems such as aggression, antisocial behavior, and delinquency. The nature of the study is exploratory research.
The literature related to the topic reveals that the problem statement as debatable by a number of researchers in the present times. The debate thus split the problem into two sides. At one side, few of researchers make a debate that people with low self-esteem has to deal with the real world problems of crime and social behavior. According to them, people with low self-esteem considers themselves as separate from society which results in their possible behavior of not acting and conforming to the societal norms. This self-regard that an individual feels motivates aggression because it provides them a shelter to decrease the inferiority complex. The other side of the debate makes this claim questionable bringing into light the point that several studies fail to assert how self-esteem is related to aggression or other problems. This point leads to a conclusion by some of the researchers that high self-esteem is the major contributor towards the problems of aggression and crime.
The theoretical arguments proposed in the favor a link of low self-esteem with other issues did not remain consistent in providing the conclusions. However, the support this relation has obtained leads towards the importance of understanding of the concept towards the theoretical and practical implications. The literature review was not adequate and for this purpose and this research article shows an extension of the preceding research in several ways. The study also provides some of the inconsistencies in the previous research work. The main highlighting points are that the previous researched fail to recognize the element of discriminatory validity related to the independent effects of self-esteem and narcissisms on the societal problems. The previous research work on self-esteem and aggression does not meet up with the standard of this research study because of the methodological differences.
The study only to some extent lives up to the guidelines for science. It is because the self-report measures are used by the research, so a probability exists that the relation in findings might be on the basis of share method variance.
This research study is consistent with the ethical standards and a proper balance between complying with ethical standards and uses comprehensive scientific practices. The point that proves this fact is a use of a number of approaches to establish the truth and conduct further research in the work already done, so that a conclusion can be made regarding whether one should favor the association between low self-esteem and the other issues or vice versa.
The major concepts in the research are to extend the research work conducted on the relation that low self regard has with the other externalizing variables. A multi method approach along with the ...
