Article Review: Boys Suicide put spotlight on Abusive Japanese Teacher

Introduction

Corporal punishment is banned in most of the countries but yet the cases of corporal punishment happen in most of the countries. Mostly the subjects of the corporal punishment are children who are punished physically either at school by their teachers or at homes by their parents. The motivation behind their punishment is to make them disciplined. However, most of the times the punishment creates frustration among the children and their confidence shatters as well. In this assignment we will discuss the article in which we will see that how dangerous the corporal punishment is and what are its consequences. Furthermore, we will also analyze the theoretical principles related to the article. Also, the concepts learned in the lecture will also be applied in this article.

The incident defined in the article caused great panic in Japan. This article also highlights that no wrong action can be stopped by just banning it. As the corporal punishment was banned in Japan but yet this sad incident took place ultimately causing the death of the seventeen years young boy. There might have been many incidents of corporal punishment in Japan but this one got attraction as the boy committed suicide. There is greater need to give awareness to the teachers and parents in Japan to refrain from corporal punishment as it can cause many problems and the consequences of which can also be very severe (Rohlen, & LeTendre, 1999). Moreover, the corporal punishment is not only a Japanese phenomenon but many cases of corporal punishment have been reported in both the developing and developed countries which need to be stopped (Rohlen, & LeTendre, 1999).

Discussion

An unfortunate incident took place in Japan in which a boy of seventeen years committed suicide due to the physical punishment by his coach. It is not the first case of suicide in Japan as annually almost 30,000 people commit suicide at Japan (Yokoyama, 2002). However, this case is different from other cases as the boy committed suicide as a result of physical punishment by his teacher. This case took place on 23 rd December, 2012. The boy who committed the suicide was the captain of his basketball team apart from that he also had an excellent academic record. The basket ball coach has been working with the school since 1994 and presently he is 47 years old. The boy before committing the suicide had written a letter in which he has said that he could not coup up with the physical punishment by his coach due to which he is committing suicide. However, after the investigation it was found that the coach had slapped the boy several times.

Similarly, the survey after this conducted by the school found that he has been involved in physical punishment from a long period. The reason given by the coach was that he wanted to teach the students discipline that's why he employed corporal ...
