Critical analysis
Nurses can promote health of a family and its members by observing and interviewing the family and applying the assessment to the nursing process. Family health defined by the clinical model is “lack of evidence of physical, mental, or social disease or deterioration or dysfunction of the family system” (Bomar, 2004, p. 65). When there is potential or actual problems affecting individuals in a family it can jeopardize the health of the family as a whole. To properly assess a family unit the nursing process is used. According to the Roy Adaptation Model six steps have been identified in the nursing process including assessment of behavior and stimuli, creating a nursing diagnosis, goal setting, intervention and evaluation (Roy & Andrews, 1999). The purpose of this paper is to use this nursing process to develop a plan of care that addresses a nursing diagnosis of the Perdu Family to promote the health of their family system which “is directed toward increasing family unity and quality of life” (Bomar, 2004, p. 69).
The Perdu Family is an open nuclear family with four members and are currently in the launching center developmental phase. Mobey age 47 is the mother, Durky age 56 is the father and they have been married for 24 years. They have two daughters, Arrly age 20 and Rosey age 18. They reside in a small town in NYS where they own a home and have remained in that home since their marriage. Currently Arrly is the only member who does not live at home because she is away at college. The family is Caucasian and practice American culture. The Family is financially stable and is very satisfied with their home and neighborhood. They have strong commitment and loyalty to their family and they are very connected but do balance this with their individuation. They experience harmony and cohesion, and pull together to cope with family crisis. At the present time the family seeks health care for health prevention and when symptoms are present. Mobey is the most involved with health care currently as she is seeking health treatment for fibroid tumors on her uterus. She will need to have a hysterectomy in March. Therefore after a full 1st and 2nd level family assessment using “observation, measurement and interviewing to obtain behavioral data” (Roy & Andrews, 1999, p. 68) a nursing diagnosis was reached. Nursing diagnoses are statements that interpret data obtained from the 1st and 2nd level assessments ...
