Introduction

Federal and state government agencies, often under the auspices of health boards, have taken a lead role in promoting effective communication. Health communication interventions also have moved beyond the individual level to address global issues such as poverty, environmental issues, and needed reform of the health care system.

The role of the media has been a crucial aspect of health communication. Health communication professionals work in concert with media outlets to further their goals. Examples of the collaborative relationship between the media and health communication professionals include developing health promotion campaigns to target specific audiences. In recent years, health communication delivery strategies have changed dramatically with the advent of online and social media. For example, tele medicine has expanded the delivery of health care and health communication to virtual environments (Hemmings, 2006, pp. 13-19)..

Although the development of health communication theory and practice has a relatively short history, it has reached a critical point of development. Although insights from a variety of theoretical traditions in the social sciences have been adopted, health communication has tended to focus on practical applications and implementation techniques. The field has struggled, valiantly in many instances, to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving scientific and clinical advances that characterize the health care field in general. Yet health communication has enormous potential to alleviate suffering, improve mortality rates, enhance patient satisfaction and quality of life, and promote the overall physical and psychological well-being of society in general. Given the complexities and multiplicities of health communication processes, the need for effective communication strategies cannot be overemphasized (Jerome & Pianta, 2008, pp. 159-65).

Values: Being a Student
