Medical approach focuses on freeing the people from diseases. In this approach, patient is dependent on medical professional or experts for the treatment. Major emphasis, in this concern, is placed on patient's ability to effectively follow the medical procedures. This might include compliance with medical treatments, drug compliance, or strictly following the proper medical treatment procedures. Main objective of this approach is to reduce morbidity and premature mortality while making certain that patient remain free from disabilities, and illness conditions. Under this approach, activities include medical intervention to avert illness and health disorders. It is mainly achieved by immunization, fluoridation, and other treatment methods that are based on contemporary scientific methods.
Main weakness that has been observed in this medical approach for health promotion is its less focus on positive health. It also overlooks the social and environmental dimensions that are related to health promotion. However, main implication of this approach is the remarkable impact on reduction in disease rates & associated mortality.
The Behavioural Change Approach
The behavioural change approach places concern on the patient willingness for recovery of their health. This approach places concern on behaviour and attitude change that subsequently change the lifestyle of people. Remarkable implication of this approach is that it aims at building healthy lifestyle. In this approach, role of health experts is very crucial, as they determine the behaviours that are good or bad for health. Main aim of this approach is to encourage individuals to adopt healthy behaviours, which subsequently lead to healthy lifestyle.
Under behavioural approach, concern is placed on individuals to adopt healthy behaviours, which directly impact their motivation level for health promotion. Some of the strategies under this approach include program on healthy eating and hygiene food impact on health (Kozier & Berman, 2012). The Empowerment Approach
This approach is distinctively different from the above stated approaches for health promotion. This approach focuses on people-centric approach and is non-directive in nature. Flow of change factors is driven from the people's inner self. This approach intends to work with people or the community members to meet their perceived needs (Masters, 2012). Role of experts in this approach is to make people realize that they can change their surroundings on their own that positively affect their health condition. This enhances the skills development and people confidence level positively.
The health promoter facilitates client empowerment. This increases the indi-vidual's ability to have more control over their lives based on the concept of healthier existence. Self-efficacy principle is highlighted in empowerment approach that enables the people to derive their behaviour towards controlling their health condition.
