With the progressing societies and markets, labor exploitation and employment discrimination kept on increasing. At different times, different laws were enacted to discourage such policies and practices by organizations that promote discrimination. This research paper aims at addressing the role of EEOC in this regard by highlighting its role, laws enforced to inhibit discrimination by type and encourage diversity at the workplace. Introduction
After the WW-I and WW-II, economies around the world faced vast structural changes ranging from agricultural basis to revolutionized industries, if the world had seen the age of Renaissance, so the time came when the world entered into the dot com era. During all these times markets kept on developing, industries continued to flourish and all the responsibility was put on the shoulders of laborers or employees which gave rise to various forms of employment discrimination. In order to protect their rights and avoid labor exploitation, employment legislations were passed and implemented across countries.
Background of Employment Laws
Technological advancement has not only raised the level of competition among companies but also among the employment candidates. If companies are to look for creative and talented minds, so the employees are searching for high profile jobs yet compatible with their skills. In this race of leading the market and living well profiled lives, several cases of labor exploitation and gender or ethnic discrimination came into notice of law enforcing agencies. Despite the presence of labor and employment laws, organizations lacked human resource policies and practices in compliance with legislature. Hence law makers came tried to ensure the enforcement of employment and labor laws along with these steps taken at the federal level, concept of labor unions bubbled up in the form of labor representatives to negotiate with the employers on behalf of workers.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)
In America, Department of Justice and Federal agencies have really made significant progress ensure law enforcement at all levels in all the states of USA. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is the continuation of these actions, a federal agency charged with the law enforcement to prohibit discrimination. It is bipartisan Commission which is comprised of five presidentially appointed members with assigned duties and responsibilities and these include the Chair, Vice Chair and three Commissioners (www.eeoc.gov). EEOC provides supervision and coordination of all EEO policies, practices and regulations. Few of the laws enforced by EEOC are as under (Doyle, n.d):
