Environmental Services

Introduction

Environmental services and management programme is a tool for review and objectives and environmental goals of the Corporation, including the responsibilities assigned to achieve the goals and objectives and the means required and timing that must be achieved. Community Hospital South is a thriving hospital known for many positives. Excellent customer service, exceptional patient care, and comfort in knowing our patients and visitors come first. Community's Environmental Services Department consists of 16 employees who work 7:30a-4:00p, 12 who work 3:30p-12:00a, and 4 who work 11:00p-7:30a. The schedule rotation is each employee works 4 days through the week and every other weekend, with rotating every other holiday. Each employee has an assignment cleaning cart each day that they are responsible for cleaning, stocking and maintaining.

The employees have to come in each shift and look at the schedule on the board to see where assigned area is for the day, we typically try to keep people in the same area so they get to know the area well and can rotate “extra” cleaning on slower days. They then pick up the checklist for their area; they must follow this checklist in order as much as possible to ensure all areas are covered every day. Maintaining a strict schedule and monitoring their time is essential in keeping on track with the checklist. It typically takes around 1 hour to clean a patient room after being discharged; we would like to get the cleaning time for a room down to 45 minutes without taking shortcuts on cleanliness (Kremen, 2005).

Our staff consists of one manager over all 3 shifts, one supervisor for each shift and a total of 32 housekeepers. The duties and responsibilities for the manager and supervisors are closely related, the supervisors report to the manager who then reports to administration,

Their responsibilities as stated by clement are.:

Collaborate with other departments to ensure delivery of quality services

Interview, select, train, evaluate and counsel staff in the hospital Housekeeping Department

Instruct and advise staff on changes in policies, procedures or working standards

Listen to the problems if any, of the housekeepers and sweepers and try to resolve them

Attend to the complaints and queries, if any, from other departments, or patients regarding the housekeeping functions and take necessary action.

Assist in developing, delegating and monitoring departmental goals, objectives and programs to ensure timely completion

Monitor the use of supplies and equipment and prepare a monthly request list including purchase of cleaning supplies (Pellicone, 2006).

Action Plan

A clean environment is important everywhere, but at a hospital is it critical. An environment not clean and free of viruses or infectious bacteria can be deadly to those in the hospital. Our hospital has a high bed turnover rate, which means housekeepers have to clean more rooms in a day (Jones, 2004). The main issue is getting these rooms cleaned faster, without compromising the quality. The following action plan should improve this issue:

Keeping the hospital clean is everyone's responsibility (Jones, 2004)
