Art Exhibition

I went to the art exhibition entitled Scab & Rolfe: The Unreachable World of Susan San Juan by Josephine Scab. This exhibition was at the Alsek B. Library on the 7th floor. It was composed of Josephine Scab's photographs which are an impressionistic response to the book, Pedro Paramour, written by Juan Rolfe. There are a few works of photographic art and chairs you can rest on in this exhibition. The lighting in the exhibit was very good, so I was able to see these works very well (Eco, 1967).

Pedro Paramour is a psychological novel; it represents Susan San Juan's passion, a loss of identity, anger, pain, and loneliness. This is evident in her works' gloomy and stormy atmosphere. Also, these works have the same theme and process, and there is no individual growth in the art because the works are related to the book. Only black and white colors are used, but she uses certain techniques which do not require contrast of color. One technique used is a composite photograph. This technique is used many times in her work. To relay the concept of her work she uses photographs of clouds. For example, in Cactus 1 (1998), Ms. Scab uses this technique. She combines a cactus's photograph a works in this exhibition is very dark, but you can also imagine many things from these works. Also, it is interesting to think about the techniques she used in each work. I recommend that you visit this exhibition; it is a worthwhile experience (Eco, 1967).

There are some similarities. I could say that art is still open to our mind and we can imagine every single picture, sculpture, or photography in our own way. Art still does not have definition for itself since everyone can understand it in different, unique way. Sometimes people get the point of what picture represents but sometimes they do not, so I can say that art is still keeping the main point and it talks for itself. As Sister Wendy says: “Does not this remind you…, maybe this represents…” I think that this is the point of art, that point can be seen in every art work.

If I want to compare this exhibition with the things we are learning in school, I can see many differences. First of all, this exhibition is from modern life and that makes a big difference because people today think different as they did in that time when they just want to express some kind of art. In the past, they were trying to make art, and today the art is already known, so today they are trying to imitate past arts or just trying to find new ways to express it. The second difference that I can I see here is that these photographs are full of emotions; they do not represent people, animals, or symbols but emotions.
