Luigi Pirandello - Six Characters in Search of an Author

"Six Characters in Search of an Author” is a comedy with no room for boredom. Pirandello plays with theatrical conventions and so we must take the work as an exercise in style. It allows us to explore in depth. Pirandello gives us the loneliness of the individual. The fragility of the human personality and the impossibility of certainty, all combined in his gloomy vision that leaves us without any comfort, but is expressed in exciting situations that make us believe that we understand our dilemma a little better.

The cast of a play is confronted by the unexpected arrival of six characters unknown. The work will be tested is a work of Pirandello. The characters begin to narrate their own drama in the theater and try to convince the director to put their lives on stage (Lorch 2005, pp. 4). The director, at first dismissed as crazy, but gradually convincing argument and ends up going very interested in the drama of these six characters, which are a complete family: father, mother and four children. The six are recounting the drama of their lives and emotions are exploding as the story goes. Without realizing it, have taken the stage and they are all representing the works of their lives.

The author, therefore, does not listen to the demands of the characters, because living in a fluid state is the mysterious and tragic existential condition that is what he wants to show in his theatre. The drama of the relationship between life and form is so revived persona not as drama, but of character. Actors and the public do not distinguish between fiction and reality more: the curtain fell; one realizes that the author has replaced the drama of the demonstration of the impossibility of representing it.
