Content Analysis & Development

Schilling, J. (2006). On the Pragmatics of Qualitative Assessment: Designing the process for Content Analysis. European Journal of Psychological Assessment. Vol: 22(1). pp. 28-37.

Schilling in the given article presented a thorough process for conducting a content analysis. In his article, he discussed the various issues with qualitative assessments and advocated how content analyses could prove to be the best approach for making qualitative assessments. In his research, content analysis was used to review interview transcripts of a study for an identification of their thoughts and behaviors. When conducting the analysis, Schilling had to deal with issues such as should the questions of the interviewer be transcribed. Should the verbalizations be transcribed verbatim or in an understandable manner? Should Shilling jot down his observations to assist him in the qualitative assessment? For instance, pauses, audible behaviors, motor movements etc.

In the present study, Finch intended to study the learning environment of students with respect to confidence, anxiety, motivation and self esteem. The study was designed to assess the influence of these factors on the learning environment of students. The study gained instant popularity and encouraged fellow researchers to study other variables in the learning environment. Finch had previously worked on language acquisition and second language proficiency. The study “The Non-threatening learning environment” is often used for analyses due to its clarity and rich information.
