5-HT is a known vasoconstrictor and monoamine neuromodulator that affects various functions of the central nervous system (CNS), such as sleep, mood, emotion, cognitive functions, and biological rhythms. 5-HT biosynthesis is mainly restricted to serotonergic neurons in brain and enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract. Enterochromaffin cells produce and secrete more 5-HT than serotonergic neurons (90% compare to 10%).

Produced 5-HT does not cross the blood-brain barrier and nearly, 99% of 5-HT in blood is incorporated into platelets and stored in platelet dense granules. The release of 5-HT is considered the most reliable assay for platelet activation. Although considerable research has ...
