In this analytical commentary, two articles titled 'Black Canadian feminist thought: perspectives on equity and diversity in the academy', and 'The possibilities of postcolonial praxis in education' are discussed. Both these articles shed light upon the impact of colonialism on different aspects of life. Two common themes that are selected in this analytical commentary for the purpose of discussion are the birth of racial discrimination due to post colonialism and the impact of colonialism on the educational sector. The post colonialism period created several difficulties for the dark-skinned people, particularly women. They had to face enormous oppression and challenge in order to lead their lives. They were not allowed to appear on public forums. They faced difficulties in getting education. If they managed to make it to the educational institute, they were considered as outsiders in their educational institutes. All these factors required women to come forward and fight against the oppression.
Summary with relation to the identified themes
Black Canadian feminist thought: perspectives on equity and diversity in the academy
This paper sheds light upon feminist theorizing in Canada among women of African origin. The paper lays emphasis on the stories of these women of resiliency, agency, healing strategies and survival skills as they navigate via their academic period of life. The stories of these women revealed that due to the differences created by the colonial period among different races, black people, particularly women had to face enormous difficulties as society did not give them fair chance in participating in the routine activities on the public forum. Their stories included the transformative tools they apply to deal with the oppression and challenges of the society (Wane, 2009). Education was considered as the most significant tool for transforming and dismantling the political, social and economic barriers that were created for them. Their stories give rise to the fact that oppressed women should focus on strategies to succeed in life instead of narrating and focusing on the unjust experiences they have faced in their lives.
The possibilities of postcolonial praxis in education
This article sheds light upon the possibilities of postcolonial praxis in education. The global or local emphasis of viewpoints of post colonialism gives rise to alternative techniques of theorizing question of research, curriculum and pedagogy (Subedi & Daza, 2008). Due to the impacts of colonialism, the society was divided between two types of people, the dominant ones and the oppressed ones. The dominant people were the ones who used to oppress the dark-skinned people. The oppressed people were racially discriminated against and not allowed to enjoy equal rights as the dominant ones. This paper discusses the need for theorizing novel ways for dealing with the oppression of dominant subjects. Besides that, postcolonial theory puts forward several issues which are related to education. The oppressed people were not allowed to get themselves educated in a fair manner due to racial discrimination.
