Six Sigma is management process which was initially developed by Motorola in 1985; its philosophy is to set extremely high objectives, collection of data, and the evaluation and analyzing of results. Basically it is used as a management system. However, its utilization was limited for about a decade until General Electric (GE) began to utilize it. The term sigma is used to denote variation from a certain standard, in other words it takes into account the deviation. The main motive behind Six Sigma is to take into account any defects if they exist and then develop a strategy for the elimination of those defects in a systematically way and attain the perfection level (Snee, R. D., & Hoerl, R. W. (2003).
GE started using the SIX sigma process when its CEO Jack Wilch prioritized its use to such an extent that he wanted GE to become a fully fletched Sex Sigma company by 2000. Moreover, he played a significant role in GE attaining its goals in regards to Six Sigma during this time frame. In the late 1980s GE started to focus on quality and various steps were taken for this to happen, as a result Six Sigma was formed. However, its implementation would have been difficult if Motorola was not present for assistance.
Six Sigma's foundation was laid in the eighteenth when the industrial revolution was taking place. However, its development went through another critical stage when a Motorola engineer denoted this whole quality management process as “six sigma”, they even copyrighted its implementation. Its development was further reinforced when Japanese took it under their domain, due to their affection for technological advancement. Therefore, Six Sigma's perfection could be related to the Japanese involvement. Motorola claimed that by the implementation of Six Sigma, they would be able to ten times better quality as compared to before. Asea Brown Boveri in 1993 laid particular importance upon customer satisfaction due to a proper manufacturing and his contribution is also valued regarding Six Sigma's journey.
Levels of six sigma
Six Sigma exists at every level of the organization and all of them have a distinct identity with each of them having a different role to play. There is also a chance that their implementation may vary. At the project level, such infrastructure exists that there are Green, Black and Master Belts prevailing (Gitlow, H. S., & Levine, D. M. (2005).
Master Black belts are known to be the champions; they perform the in-house coaching related to Six Sigma. They assist both black teams and green teams. The strategic implementation of Six Sigma comes under the head of Master Black Belts and they are required ...
