Discussion
The characterization of hamlet is particularly astute and deserves applaud. The character of hamlet is full of emotions. He normally dresses in black to signify his bereavement. His is an emotional wreck trying to make sense of his world. His sorrow is evident to all spectators but he says that what people think and feel cannot even begin to describe the misery he feels on the inside. The man is in love with his father, it is the kind of love that has consumed him and has enveloped discontent around him (Moody, p. 37). The people around him such as his mother and Claudius try to reason with him and tell him that life for the living has to go on and death is but the most inevitable reality of humans' existence on the face of this world. There are times when the man is hit by his mother's cold attitude. She marries her brother-in-law very soon after the death of Hamlet's father.
The circumstances and the events that unfold in his life make him at fault. Ophelia who is innocent and has no role in the death of hamlet's father is exploited by the man to show his disgust towards his mother. He becomes vicious and does not realize it until it is too late.
He hates everything that has the potential of making a man happy. In particular he abhors drinking as he believes it takes a man away from his higher goals, and hates sensuous dancing. The worst part of his grief and the sudden change in his attitude is that it has made him a bad man (Jamieson, p. 4). He does not feel any respect for women and Gertrude and Claudius are partly responsible for it. If there is one person who truly suffers because of this, is the innocent Ophelia. The relationship between the two is discussed hereunder.
