Analysis of Constantly Risking Absurdity

Introduction

The poem, “Constantly Risking Absurdity” is free verse poetry, written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. This poem has 33 lines divided into 3 ever more short sections 18, 9 and 6 lines. In this poem, Ferlinghetti has examined the roles of the poet in the society. Furthermore, the poem examines the association of the poet to the audience and the risks that a poet must take. The poem further examines the qualities of the perceptions that a poet should have and the relationship if poetry to truth and beauty (David, pp. 1).

Analysis of “Constantly Risking Absurdity”

The poem appears unstructured to a reader, who is unfamiliar to related structure with free verse. On the other hand, Ferlinghetti has used structures in this poetry for emphasizing the significant terms and for the indication of significance of ideas (Roethke, pp. 35).

Many poets have come instinctively and unconsciously to understand the end position of words as insistent, through reading traditional poems. Ferlinghetti achieves two levels of emphasis strong and moderate with the use of drop line (Roethke, pp. 36).

The terms “absurdity” and “audience” has more strong emphasis that is suitable for a poet whose work will not remain in the memories, if the addressees do not appreciate his poet. The term “absurdity”, “performs” and “heads” have less emphasis; however, these words have more emphasis than the rest of the five words in the line (Roethke, pp. 37).

Since Ferlinghetti has written free verse, he has not used this technique in each every line. For example, the line six, seven and eight have merely dropped; albeit, the lines do not go back to the left hand margin; they have returned enough to show that drop line is not in the structure (Roethke, pp. 38).
