In a specific subject or topic the interest initiates the process of research. However, it is the knowledge with the topic that assists in defining a suitable research question for the study. After then the questions begin to come out from a deficit of observed knowledge within a field of study or a subject area. The research question is an important part of the research. The research question of the topic is “What is the Prevalence of parental substance misuse in social work with children and families”?
Process of the Evidence
The process of conducting the research was based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis. For the research, the peer reviewed and reliable sources were accessed and for getting the real world data, the target audience i.e. parents and children were interviewed. In addition to that, group discussions were also performed. A lot of data was available on the child abuse so the topic was narrowed down and refined to impact of substance on families and children.
For this various articles and journals were reviewed in which the most prominent are “Children's Needs - Parenting Capacity. The Impact of Parental Mental Illness, Problem Alcohol and Drug Use and Domestic Violence on Children's Development, The Stationery Office: London (1999), Institute for Research and Innovation of Social Services: Leading for outcomes: parental substance misuse (2011), Understanding and modifying the impact of parents' substance misuse on children, Advances in Psychiatric Treatment (2007), and Parental substance misuse and child care social work: findings from the first stage of a study of 100 families, Child & Family Social Work (2006)”. In these journals and articles, it was observed that almost one third of the newly qualified social workers receive no training on the substance misuse. While the other 50 percent of the social workers receive a half day or less than that training on the substance misuse.
Another example of what was observed is that almost 60 percent of the practioners recognized that this issue need improvement for the children that have impact by the substance misuse of parents. In concordance with the literature at the present time, it considers the use of legal or illegal drugs is a growing problem of public health in both developed and developing countries that are developing.
The negative consequences of this situation are expressed with a wide range of health problems, social, economic and, in addition to a significant impact on the family. This problem becomes apparent in a very vulnerable group such as schoolchildren and adolescents with early onset of use of licit and illicit drugs. It is proven statistically that annual prevalence of abuse of cocaine in the population is over 1.5 percent (Baumrind, 2005, 69).
