CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the topic
All organizations or people in them learn, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Learning is a necessity for organizations to survive (Velada & Caetano, 2007). Some companies practice action learning, where they are actively seeking out new and better ways of conducting their business on a continual basis. Others take a passive approach to learning. Either way, learning takes place in every company or organization. Camair-Co is a start-up national airline of the Republic of Cameroon that is based in Douala and employs 438 personnel comprising both national and foreign expertise. Significant investment initially focused on training for licensed positions as a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirement for granting operating rights to non-licensed crew. Subsequently, training filtered through to other areas of the organisation. However, it is important to establish the extent of the learning transfer achieved based on the investment undertaken and the learning transfer methods used to increase employee effectiveness and value.
In today's competitive business environment, strong talent is critical to the success of organisations and effective training contributes greatly to developing the necessary individual capacities. According to Kirwan (2009), companies make investments in training and capacity building but the researcher questions the extent to which trainees transfer learnt skills back to the workplace All the issues related to learning practice will be discussed in detail in the entire research study.
1.2 Statement of the problem
According to Velsor (2010) minimal investments are made in training because of the poor rates of learning transfer. This is further highlighted in the Kirkpatrick model whereby three levels of evaluation focus on measuring learning outcomes and only one out of the four ...
