CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

In UK, different buildings and homes account for about 50% of the total consumption of energy and emission of carbon dioxide in the environment (Demerit and Langdon 2004, 325). The manner, in which a building is built, insulated, heated up, aired out, and the kind of fuel that is utilized by the inhabitants' leads up to the total consumption of energy by that particular building and; therefore, emission of carbon from that building.

The UK government has been bringing in a number of strategies that have an aim to play a part in improving the efficiency of energy of the different buildings and homes in the country and conform to the targets of reduction in emission of carbon reduction.
